12 confirm Cosafa Women’s Championship
Twelve teams, including Malawi, have confirmed their participation at the 2018 Cosafa Women’s Championship following the inclusion of Cameroon and Uganda as guests.
Cosafa deputy chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said the guest teams will make the tournament, which will be staged in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality from September 12-22, competitive and exciting.
He said: “This year’s tournament is going to be very compeititive. As you know, Cameroon are third best team in Africa. They qualified for the last Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2015 and were also at the London Olympic Games three years earlier. They also finished as runners-up in the last two African Women’s Championships. They have also already qualified again for this year’s competition.”
The two guests join Cosafa members namely South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland for the draw to be held next Wednesday.
The 12 teams will be split into three groups each containing four sides. The top team in each pool will advance to the semi-finals along with the best-placed runners-up.
South Africa are the defending champions after they beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in the final last year.
Malawi was knocked out in group.
